With news of Harmonix's bargain-basement sale price, we polled our Twitter followers to find out the real worth of the developer.
Earlier today, it was revealed that Harmonix bought its independence from Viacom for just $50. While the sale price was a mere formality, we wanted to know what our 23,000-plus Twitter followers thought of Harmonix's worth. Here's our question:
Today's Sound Off: Reports say Viacom sold Harmonix for a song (a $50 song). How much would YOU have paid?
A few of our respondents joked about paying even less (or far more than necessary) for the company. Here's the gag responses:
@GameProLess.
@GameProeleventy billion dollars. :-)
The more realistic replies put the price in perspective, mentioning Harmonix's up (and down) side. Here are those responses:
@GameProWell, $50 and a ton of debt. That and Viacom will get like a $150 million dollar tax break. I wouldn't have bought it.
@GameProIf I can pay less than 50 bucks and get millions in return that makes me a very smart man and a millionaire too
@GameProWhile it'd be fun to pay the same price as a game for a company, taking on their liabilities is far beyond my means&willingness.
While $50 isn't a realistic price for a development studio to run for, Harmonix's price of independence was likely more of a symbolic move than the result of intense negotiation. Of greater importance is what the developer does with itself now that it's free of corporate ownership. It should be interesting to see what 2011 has in store for the $50 developer.
