The assets from Civilization V’s upcoming DLC packs tantalize us with new opportunities in strategery. Rounding out our day in screens are two iOS titles that might otherwise fly under the radar – one brings celebretards and ninjas together in a ridiculous satire, while the other lets you turn your pictures into a playable video game environment.

SOE Believes No Customer Information Compromised, News from GamePro

It appears that Sony Online Entertainment's servers were also affected by the recent system intrusion, but customer information remains safe at this time.

In astatement on the PS3 DC Universe Online forums, Linda"Brasse"Carlson, director of global community relations for Sony Online Entertainment, stated that"to the best of our knowledge, no customer personal information {has} got out to any unauthorized person or persons."Carlson also stated that the company's investigation of an intrusion into SOE's services was ongoing and that it would notify customers if there was any change in its findings.

SOE Believes No Customer Information Compromised

The announcement confused the community somewhat, many of whom now believe that there are conflicting messages coming from different parts of Sony --yesterday's announcement from Patrick Seyboldfirmly in their minds. Representatives from SOE reminded people that SOE systems and databases are separate from PSN's -- althoughDC Universe Onlinemakes use of a user's PSN wallet to fund the game's subscription fee. Sony Online Entertainment apparently suffered some"service interruption"at the same time as the PSN/Qriocity hack, but according to thePlayStation Support site, its services are currently available -- so long as you're not trying to access them from a PS3, of course.

SOE representatives quickly jumped on any legal discussions in the forums, deleting the posts in question with a blunt"we cannot allow legal discussions in the forums."There was no public explanation for this, just an invitation to privately message moderators to discuss.

In asubsequent announcement, Carlson apologized for the inconvenience, noting that"SOE is committed to delivering stable and entertaining games for players of all ages."She also announced compensation plans for those affected, including"special events this weekend across our game portfolio, including a Double Station Cash day on Saturday, April 30th."Carlson also claims that the team is"working on a 'make good' plan for players of the PS3 versions of DC Universe Online and Free Realms. Details will be available soon on the individual game websites and forums."

Sony Speaks on PSN Outage; Personal Info Hacked, News from GamePro

Sony has finally issued an official statement on the subject of the recent PSN outages -- and it's not great news.

Sony Finally Speaks on PSN Outage

Patrick Seybold of Sony has finally made a PlayStation Blog post regarding the recent PSN outages that is more than a couple of sentences long. Check it outhere.

According to Seybold, between April 17 and April 19"certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network."

In response, Sony has switched off PSN and Qriocity (you've probably figured this out by now) but also hired an"outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation"and"quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by rebuilding our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information."

The compromised information is believed to include name, address, country, email address, birthdate and PSN ID.Seybold says it's also possible that profile data includingpurchase historyandbilling addressas well aspassword security answersmay have been obtained. He does, however, state that there is no evidence credit card data has been taken, although he is not ruling out the possibility.

Seybold advises users to"be especially aware of email, telephone and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information"and that Sony will never ask for that information. He also recommends that when PSN and Qriocity are back online, users immediately change their password, and that those concerned about credit card fraud should contact the credit bureaus -- full details are listed in thePlayStation Blogpost.

Well, thanks for the update, Sony, but people might have liked to know this a little bit sooner.

UPDATE:Sony has released an official Q&A document regarding the outages. You can read ithere.

Roleplayers' Realm II: Final Fantasy IV&The Elder Scrolls V, News from GamePro

Our latest RPG podcast takes a look at Final Fantasy IV, The Witcher 2, Dungeon Siege III and The Elder Scrolls V! We also ask the ultimate question: Cecil, Cloud or Other?

Roleplayers' Realm II: Final Fantasy IV&The Elder Scrolls V

What does Final Fantasy IV mean to you?

To me, it's the Final Fantasy that I picked up shortly after finished the sixth and seventh entries, then put right back down again before finally finishing it on the GBA a decade later. For special guest Christian Nutt, it's the RPG that practically defined his RPG fandom. And then there's Ray, who hasn't quite finished it yet (shame, shame).

With the latest re-release on the market now (my review can be found here), the three of us get together to reflect on the game that still defines Japanese RPGs some 20 years later. Of course, it doesn't take us long to stray into tangents like our vain attempt to directly compare each Final Fantasy to each Dragon Quest, but that's okay. If you're listening to this podcast, you'll probably like those sorts of tangents.

For the second segment, PC RPG nut Jason Wilson joins me to chat about the time we've spent with The Witcher 2, Dungeons Siege III and The Elder Scrolls V. Here I must apologize, as there are a couple points where the audio quality dips a bit. I promise that each instance only lasts a couple minutes apiece, but you should be aware.

A number of you have inquired as to whether this podcast will be popping up on iTunes anytime soon. Well, I can tell you that it has been submitted, and it should be up momentarily. If it isn't, I'm going to go crack some skulls at Apple. Until then, you can access it through our direct link below or by manually subscribing via our XML RSS Feed (below).

Tri-Ace Struts Their Stuff With Real-Time Graphics Demo, News from GamePro

The Star Ocean developer shares their experiments in real-time graphics with an impressive video clip.

The video above was posted yesterday bytri-Ace, the developer of RPGs such as the Star Ocean series andResonance of Fate. Say what you want about their games (they're an, uh, acquired taste), but since the beginning of the current console generation, they seemed dead-set on making the best-looking games they can.

The video shows a male space explorer/soldier of some kind in a scene that demonstrates many different lighting and physically-based shading effects to bring out a realistic look in many different types of surfaces and materials. On the whole, the scene is meant to show how real-time movie-quality animation can be done convincingly on today's hardware, even though the constantly evolving quality of PC games are where most of the advances are.

According to tri-Ace's ownresearch page, the animation was made for Xbox 360 and PS3 (they weren't specific as to which one the video comes from), runs at 30 frames a second at 720p, and uses real-time lighting and shadowing rather than light maps. There are many more technical explanations on that page, so anyone interested in computer graphics should give it a read.

Tri-Ace made sure to state that the video isn't indicative of any actual game they're working on, so don't go nuts thinking this is"Star Ocean 5."However, it's not outlandish to think they're going to be adapting these techniques for their next game(s). The thing about graphics demos is that they're just animations, and so can use as much of a console's power as they need without worrying about extra programming like AI, menus, and all the other little bits and pieces that go into the making of an actual game.

Epic Games likes to wow people withsamplesof what the next version of the Unreal Engine can do, but game developers have to start from the ground up, relatively, to get those kinds of results, not to mention dealing with all the red tape that comes up from publishers and elsewhere. And though thinking ahead is great, tri-Ace's approach to getting the most from five year-old technology is also kind of interesting.

The Impact of PSN's Downtime (And Sony's Response), News from GamePro

The PlayStation Network's recent downtime has had far reaching effects for PlayStation 3 owners. We examine the impact on some of the platform's services, with comments from analyst Michael Pachter.

The Impact of PSN's Downtime (And Sony's Response)

The recent PlayStation Network downtime is a reminder that consoles are more connected than ever. PSN has been down for roughly three days now, during which time owners around the country have received the error code"80551021."While Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter told us that the cost to Sony is"not huge,"gamers have certainly been feeling the effects of the outages.

The advent of services such as Netflix streaming and online marketplaces means that console gamers are relying on the Internet more than ever for entertainment.

Here's a quick breakdown of the impact that the outages have had on PS3 owners, and the possible silver lining.

Fable III PC coming to Steam and Games for Windows, News from GamePro

Microsoft and Lionhead's flawed king-making adventure is set to show up on Valve's digital distribution platform as well as Games for Windows.

Fable III coming to Steam and Games for Windows

It's been a while coming, but the PC version of Fable III is almost here. It'll be launching in three separate locations simultaneously: retail, Games for Windows Marketplace and Valve's Steam store.

Those who pre-order through Games for Windows will receive a free copy of the complete Fable: The Lost Chapters game, while Steam users will receive the Rebel's Weapon and Tattoo DLC pack, which includes four weapons and five tattoo sets for character customization. The retail version doesn't have any pre-order bonuses.

While the Games for Windows pre-order bonus is significantly better -- a complete game as opposed to some ultimately useless character customization DLC -- could Microsoft making Fable III available via Steam be evidence that it's conceding defeat to Valve in the battle to dominate digital distribution?

You can pre-order Fable III for PC from later today, and it'll be available from May 17 in the US, May 20 in Europe. The PC version includes a new Hardcore mode and 3D functionality, and all the currently-available Xbox DLC will be available for the new edition.

Enslaved, Blood Stone and Napoleon: Total War up for Ivor awards, News from GamePro

Three games from last year are in the running for a prestigious Ivor Novello Award in recognition of their excellent soundtracks.

Enslaved, Blood Stone and Napoleon: Total War up for Ivors

The Ivor Novello Awards are presented annually to"celebrate honor and reward excellence in British music writing"and, according to the website,"continue to be acknowledged as the most widely coveted awards for British songwriters and composers in the world."UK newspaper The Times refers to them as"the Oscars of the music industry."

This year, three games are up for the Best Original Video Game Score award, all composed by British musicians. First up is Ninja Theory'sEnslaved: Odyssey to the West. Enslaved's soundtrack was composed by Nitin Sawhney, who previously worked on Heavenly Sword and a sizeable body of work for both film and TV. This isn't the first Ivor he's been up for, but it is the first for a video game.

The second nomination is Richard Jacques' score for Bizarre Creations'James Bond 007: Blood Stone. He's been responsible for a huge amount of music over the years, including parts of Mass Effect's score, a number of Sonic titles, Project Gotham progenitor Metropolis Street Racer and the Jet Set Radio games.

The final nomination is for Sega'sNapoleon: Total War, whose soundtrack was composed by the team of Richard Beddow, Richard Birdsall and Ian Livingstone. Sega released this soundtrack oniTuneslast week.

The inclusion of a Best Original Video Game Score category in an awards ceremony as prestigious as the Ivors is surely a sign that video games are being taken more and more seriously as a medium with each passing year. How long before we get our own event as high profile as the Oscars?

Editorial: Indie games not so humble, News from GamePro

The latest Humble Indie Bundle grossed over half a million dollars in just 48 hours, and Minecraft has made over $11 million so far. Indie gaming's here to stay.

We hear a lot of stories about how much money the big-name publishers have to throw around these days, but it seems that successful independent development is becoming something of a money-spinner these days, too. With the news that theHumble Frozenbyte Bundlehas so far grossed over $500,000 along with Notch's $11 million plus fortunes fromMinecraft, it's clear that there's money to be made, even when making digital-only titles that aren't attached to a big brand like EA, Activision, THQ or Ubisoft.

The industry as a whole is taking independent development much more seriously, too. Valve's unprecedented show of support to indie titles through itsPotato Sack Pack Portal 2 promotionis a sign that these former underdogs are growing in importance and relevance, not just to hardcore enthusiasts, but to the community as a whole.

The secret of indie games' success is not in big marketing budgets, publicity stunts, review embargoes and ill-advised campaigns relating to gamers' mothers. Rather, the most successful indie titles in recent years have gained their popularity through word of mouth -- or at least the online word of mouth-equivalent. Social networks, online video and podcasting provide a means of viral marketing which many of these indie developers take full advantage of.

It's rare you'll find an indie title that is"just another {insert genre name here}."There'll pretty much always be some kind of twist on the formula which will piquesomeone'sinterest. Take some of the most recent indie successes as examples. Amnesia? Survival horror, but with no weapons. Super Meat Boy? Platforming, but super-hard in a good-natured sort of way, and with little to no penalty for inevitable and repeated failure. Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale? An action JRPG with an excellent translation and a surprisingly deep social/business simulation angle as its main focus. The list goes on, with pretty much every indie title offering at least one of these"twists"on an established formula -- or in some cases, trying something highly creative.

Whether or not these creative ideas and interesting twists are 100% successful in their execution, one thing that they do consistently achieve is getting the community talking. That, to many of these developers, is worth far more than expensive PR campaigns, all expenses paid trips for reviewers and an occasional TV spot during a high-profile show. And for gamers, it's pretty much impossible to see a downside to the growing success of independent titles -- so long as the developers in question manage to keep that independence and remain in control of their own destinies.

I also know that given the choice between, say, Call of Duty and Amnesia, what I'd rather play, personally speaking!

Nintendo Makes Official Giant AR Card an (Augmented) Reality

As discussed among the Nintendo 3DS development team in arecent edition of Iwata Asks, plans were made to develop a large AR card as a reward for Japan'sClub Nintendo catalog. Now, just a couple of months after the system's launch in Japan, visitors to Club Nintendo can now get themselves a2.4-by-1.5-foot AR cardfor 100 Club Nintendo points. One side shows the standard"?"design, but the reverse will feature the Mario design for summoning Mario, or putting his hat on your Nintendog.

Of course, wemade our own giant AR cards, and... well, the less said, the better.

No news yet on if the card will make its way to the other Club Nintendo sites in America or elsewhere, but we don't think it's so ridiculous as to write it off.

Pokemon Global Link is finally live for all regions, News from GamePro

At long last, the Pokemon Global Link website and Pokemon Dream World have launched across all regions.

Pokémon Global Link launches today! Have you registered yet? If not, what are you waiting for?!http://bit.ly/gKJzYaless than a minute agovia webFavoriteRetweetReply

If you've been playingPokemon BlackVersion orPokemon WhiteVersion anywhere but Japan, you've likely been unable to access the Pokemon Dream World due to development issues with the Pokemon Global Link website. Finally, the wait is over, as GameFreak and Nintendo have officially opened up thePokemon Global Linkworldwide. All you have to do is register to send, trade, and collect new Pokemon with the online portal.

What this means for Pokemon fans is that they now have access to Pokemon with special abilities that normally aren't found in either of the new games. Players can also check their Random Wi-Fi Battle rankings in the Global Battle Union, edit their avatars, collect items, grow berries, customize their own digital house, plus a bunch of other activities. It's enough content to be its own game, and will most likely pad the number of hours Pokemon fans are spending with their copies of Black and White.

Even though this feature has been in production for a while, various setbacks forced GameFreak and Nintendo to launch without it. Although the site was supposed to have launched on October 13, 2010 for the Japanese release, it was repeatedly set back and shut down due to traffic issues. For the international launch of Pokemon Black and White, March 30th was the site's global premiere deadline, which was also pushed back once again due to the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Valve Reveals How Steam Works on PS3, News from GamePro

Portal 2 on PS3 will have a custom Steam overlay with many of the same features as the PC client, bridging the gap between platforms.

Valve Reveals How Steam Works on PS3

When Valveannouncedlast year that they were working on the PlayStation 3 version ofPortal 2themselves, and would make it the"best version on any console"complete with features from their Steam PC platform, the true nature of those features were still cloudy. Today, mere days away from the release of Portal 2, Valve has sent out a press release explaining what"Steam on PS3"really means.

Apparently, it means a lot. When you play Portal 2 on PS3, a Steam"overlay"will be available, not unlike the one you see when you play a PC game in Steam. When signed in under your Steam account, the overlay will track your progress, let you know your friends' online status, and immediately support Steam's cross-compatibility features, including overlap between Steam Achievements and PS3 Trophies, as well as"Steam Cloud"saved game syncing, letting you continue where you left off on either platform.

PS3 copies of Portal 2 will also include a code to download the PC/Mac version of the game through Steam, a feature that was previously known. Basically, if you're buying Portal 2 on PS3, you're covered. The game is out on April 19.

First 10 Street Fighter X Tekken brawlers revealed, News from GamePro

Meet the first set of tag-team fighters from Capcom's latest crossover brawler, Street Fighter X Tekken.

Producer Yoshinori Ono was on-hand at Capcom's 2011 Captivate event to show off the developer's progress on their latest crossover brawler,Street Fighter x Tekken. This tag-team fighting game sees some of the Street Fighter series' strongest combatants go toe-to-toe with the King of Iron Fist participants on a 2.5D playing field -- a first for the formerly 3D-exclusive Tekken cast.

Playable at the event were series staples Ken and Ryu; Air Force major Guile and mixed martial-artist Abel; and Interpol agent Chun-Li, who's partner has yet to be announced. On the Tekken side was Mishima Zaibatsu successor Kazuya Mishima and assassin Nina Williams; masked wrestler King and Vale Tudo fighter Craig Marduk; and obese brawler Bob. While each brawler is part of a canon tag-team that'll play into the game's story, players can mix-and-match fighters from both franchises.

Ono teased that we should expect to see even more fighters revealed at E3 later this year, where we'll undoubtedly see who both Chun-Li and Bob have been teamed up with.

Persona 4 anime announced, News from GamePro

The official series follows in the footsteps of the previous Persona 3 spin-off and will be on Japanese TV in the coming months.

Persona 4 anime announced

Index Corporation (the owners of Persona series publisher Atlus) has revealed Persona 4: The Animation today. The TV series features the setting and characters from the Persona 4 game, including the protagonist, who now has an"official"name -- Yu Narukami.

That's a marked change fromPersona: Trinity Soul, the previous TV anime which was indirectly based on Persona 3 and got a mixed reaction from fans. Presumably, with P4 The Animation being directly based on the game, Index may hope to appeal to fans wanting to see familiar characters.

It's still unclear exactly when P4 The Animation will air. Theofficial site for the showis pretty sparse right now, with just a character sheet and some other teases.

Top Story: PSP outsells 3DS in Japan, News from GamePro

This afternoon's Top Story is the news that the PSP has outsold the 3DS this week in Japan. Should Nintendo be worried?

According to data fromMedia Create, combined sales of the PSP in Japan this week reached 58,075, an increase of about 7,000 from last week. The 3DS, conversely, sold 42,979 units, a drop of about 8,000 from the previous seven days. This makes the PSP the best-selling hardware in Japan for the week by a considerable margin.

Top Story: PSP outsells 3DS in Japan

The jump in PSP sales was attributed to the release of a new dating sim named Amagami. The new game sold 69,221 units and looks like it may have shifted more than a few systems, too. But this wasn't the only PSP game to do well; BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II sold a healthy 23,808. The only 3DS title in the top 10 software sales this week was baseball game Pro Yakyu Famista 2011, which charted at number 9 with 12,851 sales. The PSP had several more entries in the top 10, however, including Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection, Monster Hunter Freedom 3, Dissidia 012{duodecim} Final Fantasy and Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity.

While it may sound surprising for Sony's ageing portable to outsell Nintendo's brand new hardware, it's worth bearing in mind that the PSP has traditionally seen greater success in the East than it has in North America. Titles such as Monster Hunter also enjoy considerable success in Japan -- ad hoc handheld multiplayer is much more of a cultural phenomenon than it is in the West.

The 3DS is also still regarded as unproven technology to some. While early adopters have been enjoying playing the launch titles, messing with the 3D camera and going walkabout in an attempt to score some StreetPass hits, there aren't many killer apps as yet. They'll come, sure, but it may well end up being a slow but gradual burn for the new handheld.

Top Story: What does this Valve pic mean?, News from GamePro

Valve's alternate-reality game has been running since April Fools' Day, and participants are gradually getting closer to the truth.

A number of online game news outlets have been receiving mysterious puzzle pieces via email from Valve boss Gabe Newell. Each image features part of a picture with a faded numerical code in the background, and they fit together to form a set of nine square tiles. The clever people at theValve ARG Wikihave determined that fitting them together and inverting the colors produces this image:

Top Story: What does this Valve pic mean?

The Wiki types have determined that the picture in the puzzle appears to be a bathysphere. Forum members here atGameProhave suggested that it also resembles the Stephen Merchant-voiced Wheatley fromthis Portal 2 trailer.

The numbers in the background of the image can be converted to ASCII character codes which seem to spell out the following nonsensical message -- though participants are still trying to refine the"translation."

"I released sequels ahead of schedule, that was a joke. My goal is to emancipate something else early. But they're on to me. The system is in lockdown. I still have access to thirteen off-site chambers and am installing a test in each one. I am going to need a lot more test subjects to move forward. Waiting and am expecting immediate compliance."

The"test chambers"sounds like a reference to Portal, but it's also a reference to the Potato Sack Pack bundle released on Steam on April Fools' Day which started the whole challenge. The 13 games within the bundle have seen minor updates which add hidden challenges and offer additional clues to the puzzles of the ARG as a whole. There's also conjecture that Valve has been closely watching the progress of the participants with some interest.

There's a full history of the investigationhere. It's pretty widely assumed that the ARG is a promotional gimmick forPortal 2, butJoystiqpointed out earlier that the"bathysphere"in the image may have been seen before inHalf-Life: Episode Three concept art.

The investigation continues.

Sex in games: time to grow up?, News from GamePro

BioShock developer Ken Levine recently described video game sex scenes as being closer to Team America than Black Swan. Is it time we grew up a bit?

The issue of sex in video games is one which hasn't yet been resolved with any degree of certainty. Although we're certainly seeing more sex scenes in games than we used to, they're still very prudish, even going so far as to have characters keep their underwear on in most cases. Much of this is likely due to the clumsiness of polygonal characters doing anything that involves touching each other, but there's a number of other issues to consider, too.

Sex in games: time to grow up?

The main question which should be asked is: do we reallyneedsex in videogames? The simple answer is"of course we don'tneedit"-- but writers who want to explore narratives with themes of romance, love and sexuality shouldn't feel like they are barred from the subject. On the contrary, video games are now experienced by such a wide range of people that there's no reason we shouldn't see more mainstream interactive entertainment with a more adult tone.

Irrational Games' Ken Levine has a theory, and shared it with VG247 in arecent interview.

"The fact that it's even controversial,"he explained,"says that the perception of the industry is that we're making toys or something, as opposed to making creative expressions for a range of audiences -- including adults."

Developers and publishers got over their fear of graphic, bloody violence long ago, but sex is still a great taboo. Dragon Age II, for example, features a level of gore that would make Mortal Kombat blush, but heaven forbid you catch a glimpse of a bare nipple during an intimate scene. This is partly down to the overblown reaction of media outlets such as Fox News when news of sex scenes in games hit the mainstream, but it's also evidence of a certain level of prudishness on the part of triple-A developers and publishers in particular.

The independent scene, conversely, seems to have little problem exploring sexuality when appropriate. Many Japanese visual novels, for example, feature strong themes relating to romantic love, and the use of sex is often an important part of the exploration of those themes. Recent freeware titleDon't Take It Personally, Babe, It Just Ain't Your Storyalso explores sexuality, both homosexual and heterosexual, though does so more through implication than explicit scenes. Importantly, though, it doesn't treat the player like a delicate flower who thinks sex is dirty, filthy, nasty.

Sex is a fundamental and important life experience. Including sex in a game doesn't make that game pornographic -- but it also doesn't mean that developers have to hold back. At the moment, the mainstream of the industry as a whole is very much like a gang of giggling teenagers looking at a Victoria's Secret catalog and hoping their mom doesn't find them.

It's time we grew up, and got comfortable being naked.

Did Activision kill Bizarre Creations?, News from GamePro

When Bizarre Creations closed its doors on February 18 this year, many gamers blamed Activision for the studio's death. How much truth is there in that accusation?

The day Bizarre Creations closed, there was an outpouring of emotion from gamers and developers alike. While the studio's games had seen a few ups and downs in terms of quality, there was little denying that at least the Project Gotham Racing and Geometry Wars franchises were genuine classics of the last couple of generations. Many were quick to point the finger at Activision as the ones to blame for the studio's death. But a soon-to-be-published interview fromEdge magazineraises a few interesting points.

"I don't think the atmosphere differed too much during the years before Activision,"said creative director Martin Chudley."We were always proudly independent. When Activision took over, we really felt that they would leave our culture alone, and for a while it was fine, but slowly the feeling did start to change. We weren't an independent studio making 'our' games any more -- we were making games to fill slots."

Former design manager Gareth Wilson defended Activision, noting that the change in office culture and atmosphere was mostly"just the reality of managing so many people,"and Chudley admitted that the final version of Blur"failed to resonate with the games-buying public."

This part is simply tactful nonsense, of course -- any lack of"resonance"was almost entirely the fault of Activision's Mario Kart-lampooning ad campaign. Besides being an unsubtle and undignified prod at a game that wasn't even a direct competitor, it caused many potential customers to misjudge the kind of game Blur actually was. And as a result, it didn't sell. Even immediately after launch, peak populations on the multiplayer servers rarely exceeded 2,000 across all modes. This was nothing to do with Blur's quality -- anyone who actually did pick it up will agree it's a great game. Rather, it was down to it being released to little fanfare and lacklustre marketing, causing it to pass by most gamers unnoticed -- the kiss of death to a new IP this late in a console cycle.

One interesting fact about the whole debacle that doesn't appear to have been mentioned previously, however, is that Activision actually offered the studio back to its founders, who declined the offer.

"I personally thought there was far greater potential for the security and well-being of the company if a third party could come in,"explained Chudley. Before you start lighting the torches and raising the pitchforks, though, know that there was a good reason for Chudley's decision: growth. Success of past titles, even under Activision's ownership, had caused Bizarre's ranks to swell to over 200 people.

"We just didn't have the skills, capability or finances to look after {that many} people,"said commercial manager Sarah Chudley."Martyn and I were always small-company people, which is why we stepped aside when we realized it needed big-company skills to manage."

Activision's involvement with Bizarre was, in many ways, both a blessing and a curse for the developer. Whilst the increased financial backing from the publishing giant allowed huge expansion of the development team and the pursuit of more ambitious titles, their creativity was stifled by focus groups, committees and analysts. It also meant that when things did eventually go wrong, the founder members of the team weren't in a position to be able to rescue their own company.

Did Activision kill Bizarre Creations? Perhaps not directly, but their involvement certainly didn't help in the long term. Let's hope no more creative, independent developers meet the same fate in the near future.

Creativity is dead? Don't take it personally, babe, News from GamePro

It's easy to assume that the big business of the games industry stifles creativity. But every now and then something comes along to remind you all is not lost.

Last year'sDigital: A Love Storywas a remarkable game in many ways. Not only did it manage to tell a captivating story without using graphics, it also managed to capture the feeling of using a modem-equipped computer in the 1980s perfectly. Not only that, it was (and still is) completely free. Now Digital's pseudo-sequel, the curiously namedDon't Take It Personally Babe, It Just Ain't Your Storylooks set to follow in its predecessor's footsteps, though in a markedly different style.

Creativity is dead? Don't take it personally, babe

Don't Take It Personally... casts players in the role of a high school teacher in charge of a small class of literature students. Throughout the course of the game, the issues of privacy erosion, gay drama, young sexuality and the perils of online socialization are explored to tell a branching tale with several endings. Like Digital, there is a technology connection -- whilst talking to the students in the class, it's possible to use your in-game tablet computer to"eavesdrop"on their Facebook-style public social network communications and determine their reactions to the choices you make. They, at the outset, have no idea that you're doing this, immediately raising some interesting ethical questions.

Both Don't Take It Personally... and Digital were produced by the appropriately namedChristine Loveas part of the NaNoRenO project, also known as (Inter)National Ren'ai Game Writing Month. For the uninitiated, Ren'ai is a broad term to describe games where there is a strong plot element of romantic love. Dating sims obviously fall into this category, but ren'ai games aren't automatically dating sims. Final Fantasy VIII, for example, is regarded as a ren'ai game by those in the know.

While Digital resembles a 1980s version of Introversion Software'sUplink, Don't Take It Personally...'s visual novel gameplay and anime-inspired graphics more closely resemble what we traditionally know as the dating sim genre. Its narrative, however, explores a variety of issues that many games typically shy away from. It's easy to see that Christine Love is a writer first and a game developer second.

While the game's slow pace and text-heavy nature won't be to everyone's taste, the fact that games like this exist is something to take heart in when it feels like no-one makes anything but shooters any more. And it's free, too, so why notcheck it out? If you don't enjoy it, we won't take it personally. It just ain't your story.

Top Story: PlatinumGames: Japanese companies have lost their vigor, News from GamePro

This morning's Top (real) Story is the news that PlatinumGames is relaunching itself in an effort to"ignite a Japanese games revival."

Bayonetta,VanquishandAnarchy Reignsdeveloper PlatinumGames has published a somewhat damningopen letter to the industryfrom its president and CEO Tatsuya Minami via its website. Minami bemoans the decline of original titles and the fact that Japanese games companies have"lost their vigor."

Top Story: PlatinumGames: Japanese companies have lost their vigor

"I believe that games exist to offer fresh surprises to those who play them,"Minami writes."As members of the games business, we have always pursued the creation of the new, and we take pride in doing our part to support our industry. However, the current games business is struggling. The 'fresh surprises' I mention are becoming few and far between, especially in our home of Japan."

Minami's sentiments echo those of many gamers who see the increasing domination of the market by triple-A publishers as a threat to originality, creativity and innovation. Call of Duty makes lots of money, even months after its release, so why make anything different?

"Series grow ever-longer; original titles are on the decline,"Minami continues."Japanese games that garner worldwide acclaim are slipping away. This state of affairs deeply saddens us."

Minami aims to relaunch PlatinumGames, a company he believes to be"one of the very few healthy Japanese games companies,"as a"Japanese standard bearer in the competitive global video game market."He wishes his company, redubbed"Platinum Next,"to be a leading ambassador for Japanese game studios on the worldwide stage -- and to show publishers and developers around the world that"pursuing the creation of the new"is something which is still both viable and desirable.

"We're in this fight for the long haul,"he concludes. Time will tell if he's managed to rally the troops enough to gather beneath his banner.

April Fools' Day in the games industry, News from GamePro

The games industry seems to love April Fools' Day. This year has been no exception so far, with news of everything from sexy motion control games to casual-gaming microwaves doing the rounds.

If you follow any games journalists on Twitter, you would have undoubtedly seen a lot of complaining, curmudgeonliness and cynicism this morning. The reason for this is simple: April Fools' Day is a massive pain in the backside for the games press -- real stories struggle to get noticed amidst nonsense churned out by developers, publishers and manufacturers looking to play a few childish pranks on everyone. To prove this fact once and for all, this morning's News Flashes have contained a mixture of real and spurious headlines. All of them are from genuine, usually reputable sources -- just not all of them are true. Which ones do you think got the most views?

April Fools' Day

If you guessed that it was the fake stories that got the most hits, even first thing in the morning, you'd be absolutely right -- almost without exception. For example, within minutes of posting the clearly nonsensical news thatthe Kama Sutra was coming to motion control peripherals, over a hundred people had checked it out. X-Rated Studios' nonexistent creative director Edmund Rechtion (very funny) must be delighted at the interest his"pass-the-pad"interpretation of the ancient Hindu text has generated. That, or sex reallydoessell.

PopCap's announcement of its touchscreen microwave that comes pre-loaded with a copy of Bejeweled and 167MB of storage capacity came up closely behind the Kama Sutra story. PopCap took the bold step ofpublishing the fake press release on their siteas well as promoting it onTwitter. As ridiculous an idea as it sounds, how often have you whipped out a handheld to play a quick round of Bejeweled Blitz whilst something's nuking in the microwave? So perhaps it's not such a silly idea after all. Get on that, PopCap.

Blizzard and 1up surely tie for the sheer amount of effort that was put into their own pranks. Blizzard's announcement of theKinect-compatible StarCraft: Motion Overdriveis well up to the standard and production values of their usual efforts, and it's nice to see an April Fool from them that isn't specifically World of Warcraft-related. 1up, meanwhile, gave an exclusive (and convincing)video sneak peek at Halo Dance Central.

Some members of the press may find jokes like this irritating and frustrating, but developers, publishers, PR companies and the public seem to enjoy them every year. It's a chance for them to have a bit of fun at the expense of gullible people. And sometimes there's more truth in silly pranks than everyone thinks -- need I remind you of the secret"cow level"in Blizzard's Diablo II? This began as an Internet rumor around the time of the first game, spiralled rapidly out of control and eventually ended up becoming true.

Don't count on Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo approving that Kama Sutra game any time soon. I'd pay good money for a PopCap microwave, though.

Top Story: Will Wright's new company denied access to E3, News from GamePro

This morning's Top Story is the surprising news that Sims creator Will Wright's new company, The Stupid Fun Club, has been denied a pass for E3.

"So apparently the E3 folks decided my new company (The Stupid Fun Club) isn't in the electronic entertainment industry and is refusing to let my art director (Ben Taylor) attend. I guess thats what we get for having a fun (and stupid) name,"Sims creator and industry legend Will Wrighttweetedback on the 29th.

Top Story: Will Wright's new company denied access to E3

Somewhat surprising news, given Wright's past contributions to electronic entertainment, including one of the best-selling games of all time. However, the E3 organizers' assumption that the Stupid Fun Club isn't an electronic entertainment company is at least partially justified -- it's a technology company that provides solutions to all branches of life, not just interactive entertainment.

In fact, itsmanifestoreads more like something out of a science fiction novel, claiming that it"strives to work for the human and for the robot in creating complete symbiotic unity between the two."Right now, it's not entirely clear exactly what Stupid Fun Club is planning, save that it intends to"provide products not opinions, and shall be kept from public controversy."This ambiguity is presumably what led the E3 organizers to believe that the Club wouldn't fit with the new stringent entry requirements for the expo.

Back in 2009,VentureBeatcaught up with Wright to discuss his upcoming projects, where Wright said he found the experience of working on his own"fun,"and that he was"able to work on projects that are much broader than {he} could at Electronic Arts."The projects he was working on at the time involved one which was"toy-related"as well as a number which weren't.

"We're not restricted to one type of entertainment,"Wright said."We're kind of looking for ideas that cross a lot of different boundaries. Every product that we are working on has a web component. The web is like the connective tissue in entertainment today."

Mysterious. But sadly, whatever Wright and his small team might be working on, they won't be showing it off at E3.
