Today's top story would've been the Hotels.com abuse of the Konami code, except no other site on the web picked it up. This is probably the only time Michael Phelps places second.
A press release hit the web this morning announcing Michael Phelps: Push the Limit exclusively for Kinect. The game puts players in the shoes of a no-name swimmer hoping to bring down Michael Phelps in the world of competitive swimming.
"I'm really excited to help bring a one-of-a-kind swimming video game to the market that is reflective of my competitive nature and passion for swimming,"Phelps said in a statement packaged with the press release."This definitely isn't your typical video game; much like my training in the pool, Push the Limit is about improving and mastering every race element -- from controlling your adrenaline on the block to perfectly timing your finish. In my world, it takes a lifetime of dedication to get one-hundredth of a second ahead and I believe Push the Limit offers players a unique journey inside swimming that will challenge themselves as much as their in-game competitors."
What makes the story news is purely the Michael Phelps part. The guy won 16 Olympic medals between Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 -- 14 of them Gold -- and remains a media darling despite pleading guilty to driving while intoxicated in 2004 and a high publicized photo of himself smoking a bong in 2009. Only a handful of commenters on various sites went for the"pot-smoking mini-game"joke. Plus, it's a swimming game on Kinect -- how'sthatgoing to look?
We'll find out when the game hits shelves June 2011.
